The Ugly Truth….Hungry People Don’t Care About “Being Green”
It’s not that hungry people don’t care about the planet, the ugly truth is that sustainability remains a luxury, and inaccessible to a large swath of the population inhabiting the planet today.
Of course who wouldn’t prefer to live in a sustainable, energy efficient and beautiful home, or own a car that doesn’t pollute and suck gas? The cost of these things continues to be much higher and out of reach for many people. Even access to clean, healthy and pesticide free food is becoming increasingly out of reach for the average family. Droughts, fires, floods, and wars, don’t help the situation on an already broken system. Every person deserves the right to have access to healthy and wholesome food without having to take out a second mortgage. When it cost 8 to 10 dollars for a box of blueberries where do we go from here?
This is the situation in Canada, not sure if it’s a bit better in the U.S. At least you don’t suffer from currency sticker shock on top of inflation!
Those long food lines during Covid remain imprinted in my brain. They’re a reminder as to how fragile our food supply is. Now is the time to ensure that our cities are resilient with healthy food supplies that are accessible and abundant. The technology is here to grow great produce at large scales right in the heart of our cities. This doesn’t replace the traditional farm or supermarket, it just relieves a good part of the stress in the system in the face of climate change. Local food growth means the need for less trucking, fuel and pollution. Many places on the planet are practically out of water and it’s next to impossible to do traditional farming with a lack of water. Greenhouse and / or vertical farming uses over 90% less water than conventional farming.
No, I don’t currently own and am not selling a Vertical Farm, but I wish I did, or rather hope to in the future.
